Embodied carbon
The project’s carbon logic is grounded in material-based reasoning, drawing on well-established environmental product data for hempcrete, lime plaster and timber, which demonstrate low embodied carbon and net carbon sequestration during material growth.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Operational emissions are reduced through a combination of compact floor area, high-performance hempcrete and a vapour-open, breathable building envelope that stabilises indoor temperatures naturally.
Service and maintenance emissions
Service and maintenance emissions are reduced through the use of robust, low-processed natural materials that age well and require minimal upkeep. Unpainted lime plaster, soaped only in wet areas, reduces the need for repainting. The building’s simple construction logic and limited reliance on complex building services also reduce the need for specialist maintenance and replacement over time.
Afterlife
Timber windows and doors, built-in Elliotis ply furniture can can be dismantled, repaired or reused. The use of bio-based and mineral materials ensures that elements like the hempcrete infill and lime plaster can safely return to biological cycles at end of life, supporting circular material flows even where full reuse is not feasible.
