Afterlife

The design renovation employs an open-plan configuration in which the structural load is concentrated on the perimeter masonry and the central core. This clear approach ensures the interior can be reconfigured for different uses with minimal structural intervention. Furthermore, the sub-grade connection to the original 1970s house allows the extension to function as either an autonomous unit or a modular addition to the primary residence.

Not directly considered, but the local chestnut and oak components are secured with mechanical fixings to facilitate non-destructive removal and repurposing at the building's end-of-life. While the concrete shell is a permanent assembly, the timber and natural stone are specified as recoverable assets, ensuring these materials can re-enter the biological or technical cycles rather than being diverted to landfill.
