Embodied carbon

Efficient
  • The project was developed using a range of Holcim materials and construction technologies, including carbon prestressed concrete, low-carbon concrete, shotcrete, woodcrete, and 3D printing.
  • Carbon prestressed concrete (CPC) slabs use a proprietary process and patented technology to provide the same load-bearing capacity as traditional reinforced concrete slabs while being up to five times thinner and lighter. The panels are reinforced with closely spaced carbon wire mesh, prestressed continuously in both directions. Compared with traditional reinforced concrete slabs, CPC can reduce material use by up to 80 percent and CO2 emissions by up to 75 percent. The absence of steel reinforcement also supports a service life of up to 100 years.
  • ECOPact low-carbon concrete delivers 100 percent performance and provides at least 30 percent lower CO2 emissions than standard CEM I concrete, without the use of carbon offsets. The product is supported by Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which independently report environmental impacts across the construction, use, and end-of-life stages.
  • Woodcrete is produced by CCB Greentech, a start-up supported by Holcim. The ‘wood concrete’ mixture combines water, wood aggregate, and cement to create a durable material.
  • The project also used 3D printing to place material only where needed. This approach can reduce material use by up to 50 percent compared with traditional construction methods, without compromising performance. The precise nature of 3D printing allows complex forms to be produced with less material, helping to reduce embodied carbon.
  • Ductal Shotcrete is a wet-mix formulation that can help strengthen, stiffen, and protect new and existing structures while improving their performance. It is a time- and cost-efficient solution that can extend the service life of structures and surfaces. The product requires minimal surface preparation, does not require formwork, and has a low rebound rate, helping to shorten installation time. It can be used for applications including the repair and protection of existing structures, structural strengthening, waterproofing, and the reinforcement of steel drainage culverts.

Afterlife

  • The freestanding volumes were designed to be demountable. Screwed panels, woodcrete elements, and CPC panels allow components to be assembled, maintained, and potentially reused or adapted over time. This makes the interior less fixed and more responsive to future changes in use. CPC panels are also fully recyclable.
  • The precision of 3D printing supports more controlled construction processes, with the potential for disassembly and reuse in line with circular design principles.
