Operational Emissions / Energy

Energy Neutral

Operational emissions are minimized through a net-zero energy design strategy supported by an integrated photovoltaic canopy system that offsets 100% of the building’s annual energy demand. The all-electric campus eliminates on-site fossil fuel use and incorporates passive and high-performance systems including optimized daylighting, operable windows, exterior sun louvers, radiant heating and cooling, a dedicated outside air system, and a high-performance heat recovery chiller. Energy modeling predicts an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) between 0–2 kBTU/sf/yr, supporting energy-neutral operation.

Service and maintenance emissions

Efficient

Service and maintenance emissions are reduced through the use of durable, non-combustible, long-life materials and building systems selected for extended service life and minimal replacement. The all-electric building eliminates combustion-based maintenance activities, while high-efficiency systems, non-toxic materials, and robust exterior assemblies reduce the frequency and intensity of ongoing maintenance interventions over the life of the building.

Afterlife

The building is organized around flexible, interdisciplinary learning “sets” rather than fixed departmental layouts, allowing spaces to be reconfigured as educational needs evolve. Robust structural systems and generous floor-to-floor heights support future programmatic adaptation, while distributed faculty, commons, and collaboration spaces enable multiple modes of use beyond traditional classroom functions. This flexibility supports long-term reuse without major structural intervention.

While the primary structural systems are designed for longevity rather than disassembly, several building components support future reuse and recycling, including metal panel cladding, steel structural elements, and non-combustible exterior assemblies. Interior fit-out elements and furnishings are designed to be replaceable and adaptable over time, supporting material recovery and reduced waste at end of life.
