Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Heating is provided by an air-to-water heat pump combined with district heating, eliminating direct fossil fuel combustion on site. On-site energy generation from the 1265 solar modules on the school roof and 276 on the parking structure offsets the school's electricity demand, with the extensive green roof improving PV yield by cooling the roof surface. The building complex meets BEG 40 EE, meaning its primary energy demand is 40% of the German regulatory reference: a 60% reduction against baseline.

Service and maintenance emissions

The extensive green roof systems from Optigrün are low-maintenance by design and the use of flexible dry-wall partitioning avoids disruptive structural interventions during the building's life.

Afterlife

The school has been designed with drywall partitions so that the floorplan can be reconfigured without major structural intervention. The building volumes have both been designed to accomodate extensions and retrofit.
