Adaptive reuse structured the entire approach to the Um Bock School project.
The 1950s building was retained and upgraded rather than demolished, preserving its architectural identity, material authenticity, and social significance while reducing environmental impact and construction waste. The extension continues the original structure in both scale and character, creating a coherent and durable ensemble.
Flexibility is central to the spatial design. Offset, interlocking volumes replace conventional corridors, generating light-filled circulation that doubles as informal learning, social, and community space.
Square classrooms support evolving pedagogies and can be reconfigured over time without structural alteration.
The inclusion of a maison relais and multifunctional sports facilities allows the building to operate beyond school hours, serving the wider community and ensuring long-term relevance.
Through preserved structure, adaptable spaces, and multifunctional programming, the project creates a resilient civic building capable of evolving with future needs.
