Afterlife
The spatial structure of the Sweco Utrecht office is designed for flexibility. The blue-grey cabinet wall that anchors both floors is a demountable element, it can be reconfigured or relocated as the organisation changes. The zoning logic of the plan, with its clear routing and open collaborative areas, can accommodate different programmes without structural intervention. The loose-lay flooring system and demountable joinery mean the interior can be adapted without generating demolition waste.
Yes. Disassembly was considered throughout. Carpet tiles by Tarkett (Recharge series) are selected for material recovery at end of life. The Fika room table is made from recycled plastic waste and is fully demountable, designed explicitly for a second life. Workstation seating uses recycled PET upholstery. Custom joinery is demountable without adhesive connections, allowing full material separation. The loose-lay vinyl flooring system by Tarkett requires no adhesive, enabling tiles to be individually replaced or recovered. Together these choices ensure the interior can be largely disassembled and re-entered into the circular economy at end of use.
