Embodied carbon
Operational Emissions / Energy
Geothermal collectors draw heat directly from the ground and underfloor heating distributes that heat. The timber modular construction with optimised insulation retains heat within the building envelope, reducing the total heating demand in the first place. The combination means the building's heating needs are met without reliance on fossil fuels.
Afterlife
Kaufmann Bausysteme's modular system is designed for adaptability — the same closed room module type used here for student accommodation is also deployed in hotels, residential buildings, and social housing. The module is the unit of flexibility: the building's program could in principle change without changing its structure, simply by reconfiguring or replacing the modules within it.
The modules are designed to be dismantled at the end of a building's service life and reused or repurposed elsewhere.
