Operational Emissions / Energy
Operational emissions are reduced through an envelope-first design strategy that significantly lowers energy demand. The house achieves a high level of airtightness, with a measured air change rate of 0.458 ACH @50 Pa, limiting uncontrolled heat loss. This is complemented by a highly insulated envelope and triple-glazed windows, which together maintain stable interior conditions with minimal energy input.
Thermal mass from the concrete slab helps regulate indoor temperatures, reducing peak heating demands. A centralized mechanical system paired with radiant floor heating ensures even heat distribution and avoids frequent temperature fluctuations, limiting energy-intensive system cycling. In addition, the design carefully modulates solar gain and daylight to prevent overheating, further reducing reliance on active systems.
Service and maintenance emissions
Service and maintenance emissions are reduced through durable construction and a restrained material palette. The project relies on long-lasting materials such as wood cladding and simple interior finishes that can be maintained or repaired without full replacement. A well-executed building envelope, with careful air sealing and moisture control, helps prevent premature deterioration. By avoiding unnecessary layers and material complexity, the house is designed to require fewer interventions over time.
