Embodied carbon

Efficient

The project's embodied carbon strategy focuses on reducing the amount of new construction rather than offsetting emissions. Design strategies include:

  • Adaptive reuse of an existing exhibition hall instead of constructing a new pavilion.
  • Reuse of the existing building envelope and services infrastructure.
  • Lightweight freestanding construction requiring minimal structural intervention.
  • Modular prefabricated components that reduce material use.
  • Engineered timber used as a lower embodied carbon alternative to conventional structural materials.
  • Design for disassembly allowing components to be reused instead of discarded.
  • Flexible planning that extends the service life of the pavilion.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Operational energy reduction strategies include:

  • Reuse of an existing conditioned building rather than operating a new standalone facility.
  • High-efficiency LED lighting.
  • Mineral wool insulation improving thermal and acoustic performance.
  • Daylighting through glazed areas and translucent polycarbonate panels.
  • Flexible multi-use planning that increases utilization of existing infrastructure instead of creating additional conditioned floor area.
  • Lightweight construction minimizing demand on the existing building structure.

Service and maintenance emissions

Efficient

The project reduces maintenance-related emissions through:

  • Modular components that can be individually repaired or replaced.
  • Design for disassembly instead of demolition.
  • Durable material selection.
  • Flexible planning that avoids major future renovations.
  • Reusable construction systems that reduce replacement materials over the pavilion's lifespan.
  • Long-life infrastructure capable of supporting changing uses.

Afterlife

Adaptive reuse is a central principle of the project. Rather than creating a permanent standalone building, the pavilion transforms an existing exhibition environment and can continue serving different functions over time. The flexible layout accommodates exhibitions, community events, education, leisure activities, and future programs without significant reconstruction.

The pavilion was intentionally designed for disassembly. Features include:

  • Prefabricated modular components.
  • Mechanical connections allowing dismantling.
  • Components that can be relocated.
  • Reusable building elements.
  • Reconfigurable layouts.
  • Reduced demolition waste.
  • Support for future recycling and reuse.
