Embodied carbon

Embodied carbon overview

  • La Maraude’s structure is made of wood, with exterior cedar cladding.
  • The exterior palette draws on regionally sourced materials, including cedar shingles from SBC Cedar and windows by Fabelta, both based in Quebec, alongside metal roofing from Canadian manufacturer Ideal Roofing.
  • The use of simple rectangular volumes and vernacular construction methods indicates a straightforward building approach, with limited material and construction complexity, helping to reduce embodied carbon.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Operational emissions overview

  • Large glazed openings and high ceilings allow natural light to penetrate deep into the interior.
  • The orientation of the terraces, with a more sheltered north-facing space and a south-facing terrace that receives greater sunlight, reflects a considered response to site conditions and solar exposure, supporting passive use of daylight and seasonal conditions.

Service and maintenance emissions

The use of natural, unstained wood for the exterior cladding may reduce long-term maintenance requirements. A similar approach is taken with the metal roof, which is specified with a natural finish.
