Embodied carbon
Operational Emissions / Energy
The Dining and Community Commons targets an overall Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 85 kBtu/sq.ft./year, comprising approximately 300 kBtu/sq.ft./year for kitchen areas and 50 kBtu/sq.ft./year for non-kitchen spaces. Additionally, operational emissions are reduced through an all-electric kitchen, avoiding on-site fossil-fuel combustion; a 400 kW rooftop photovoltaic array; and the geo-exchange plant located beneath the Dining and Community Commons, which provides low-temperature heating and cooling to campus buildings.
Service and maintenance emissions
The project uses durable materials, including mass timber and terrazzo, while retaining and renovating the existing Sharples Dining Hall rather than replacing it.
Afterlife
Flexibility was incorporated within Sharples Commons, which provides multipurpose lounges, meeting rooms and gathering spaces that can accommodate different activities and users. The project also retained and renovated the existing Sharples Dining Hall rather than replacing it, extending the useful life of the existing structure.
