Embodied carbon

Embodied carbon overview

  • Embodied carbon-related strategies are mainly connected to the development and fabrication of the facade. The parametrically controlled design process supported material efficiency by coordinating the geometry, opening ratios, and depth of the composite modules.
  • Eight element types were prototyped, tested, and individually approved, while accurate lamination helped minimise excess material and reduce waste. Each lightweight facade element weighs around 20–25 kilograms and could be installed by a single worker.
  • Prefabrication also increased production and installation efficiency.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Operational emissions overview

  • The building incorporates a green roof, a 99 kWp photovoltaic system, building services designed for energy efficiency, a combined heat and power unit, EV charging infrastructure, and a sponge-city principle.
  • The rear-ventilated facade contributes to solar shading through its modular geometry. Depending on the position of the sun, around 40 percent of the exterior wall surfaces benefit from natural shading.
  • The facade wraps around the building above ground-floor level. It does not extend across the glazed ground floor and includes large openings as part of its open, crocheted structure.

Service and maintenance emissions

The ventilated facade construction includes continuous maintenance walkways, while the material concept is based on durable, low-maintenance components intended to support use across the building’s life cycle.

Afterlife

The building was not designed for a single tenant, but as a flexible office and administration building retained and operated by the client, V.I.S. Vermögensverwaltung, as part of its own portfolio. Column-free office floors allow variable floorplate sizes and a range of uses, including traditional offices, co-working spaces, and medical practices.
