Embodied carbon

Efficient

Information provided by George Dawes, Director at Bindloss Dawes.

  • The project centres on the restoration and continued use of an existing Grade II listed 18th-century farmhouse, bringing a building that had fallen into disrepair back into productive use rather than replacing it. Restoration, in particular of a heritage asset, is a positive measure to ensure the long-term future of the built environment and is intrinsically sustainable.
  • Reuse and adaptation were fundamental to the project. The farmhouse had fallen into disrepair and required careful restoration and reorganisation of the internal layout. The design approach was focused on adapting and extending the original building to accommodate contemporary family life.
  • The extension is clad in ThermoChar Ebony, a charred thermally modified timber cladding manufactured by QTD Group. The product was selected for its durability, low-maintenance characteristics, and strong visual relationship with traditional charred timber architecture.

Service and maintenance emissions

  • Sustainability considerations included the use of timber sourced from sustainably managed forests, a chemical-free charring process, enhanced material longevity through thermal modification, and reduced maintenance requirements over the building’s life.
