Embodied carbon

Efficient

Several passive design strategies were integrated to improve environmental comfort and reduce reliance on artificial systems. The building was designed as an open, climate-responsive structure connected to the surrounding park. The material strategy focused primarily on architectural expression and durability.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Although operational emissions were not calculated, several passive environmental strategies help primarily reduce cooling and lighting loads rather than relying solely on mechanical systems. These include:

  • Three-sided pergola canopies that shade façades and outdoor seating areas, reducing direct solar heat gain.
  • Large sliding glass façades that enable natural ventilation during suitable weather conditions.
  • Extensive glazing that maximises daylight penetration and reduces daytime dependence on artificial lighting.
  • An open, climate-responsive layout connected to the surrounding park that improves natural airflow.
  • A carefully integrated HVAC system serving the production kitchen while maintaining indoor comfort for visitors.

Service and maintenance emissions

Efficient

Sveral design decisions may contribute to long-term durability:

  • Permanent construction intended for long-term operation.
  • Cast concrete elements requiring minimal maintenance.
  • Integral pigmentation within the concrete eliminates the need for painted finishes on the feature bar.
  • Functional planning separates customer and service circulation, supporting efficient long-term operation.

Afterlife

BKD Bakery is a newly built permanent structure designed specifically for long-term use as a bakery within a public park. The planning strategy focused on creating an efficient layout that separates guest and service flows, ensuring the space can operate effectively over time. However, the project documentation does not address design for disassembly, modular construction, prefabricated systems intended for reuse, or circular material strategies. The building appears to be constructed using conventional permanent construction methods.
