Embodied carbon
We did not carry out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, due to the project’s funding requirements, approximately 40% of the building envelope insulation consists of natural or mineral-based insulation materials, including foam glass and mineral wool.
Afterlife
The project was not explicitly designed for future adaptive reuse or full disassembly. Nevertheless, long-term adaptability was considered through a flexible spatial organisation and robust structural concept. Learning spaces are designed to accommodate different teaching methods and can be reconfigured over time to respond to changing educational needs. The building's clear structural layout and multipurpose spaces also provide potential for future functional adaptation should the programme evolve.
Although the building is primarily constructed as a reinforced concrete structure due to challenging geotechnical conditions, several components—including interior partitions, furniture and finishes—can be replaced or adapted without affecting the primary structure. Natural and mineral-based insulation materials, such as foam glass and mineral wool, together with timber interior elements, were selected for their durability, recyclability and lower environmental impact, supporting a longer building lifecycle.
