Embodied carbon
Operational Emissions / Energy
The studio's operational emissions are reduced through a highly insulated SIP envelope, which limits heat loss and heating demand, combined with a compact footprint and carefully positioned windows and rooflight that maximise natural daylight and reduce the need for artificial lighting.
Service and maintenance emissions
The charred timber cladding provides a weather-resistant external finish that requires less regular treatment than conventional painted timber, while concealed guttering reduces exposed components and keeps the building envelope simple. The lightweight SIP construction also limits the amount of building fabric requiring ongoing maintenance.
Afterlife
The studio’s lightweight construction, together with its timber and steel components and screw-pile foundations, avoids extensive cast-in-place construction and could allow elements to be separated for reuse or recycling.
