Operational Emissions / Energy
The building incorporates 70 square metres of south-facing photovoltaic panels, an air-source heat pump for heating and cooling, high-performance insulation (R-24 walls and an R-50 roof), and triple-pane windows to reduce heat loss. The workshop is designed to operate at approximately 14–15°C, reducing heating demand. Rainwater collection also supplies water for the composting toilets.
Service and maintenance emissions
The building is designed for a minimum 50 year lifespan. Its metal cladding and durable structural materials are intended to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The building is elevated to address future sea-level rise and storm surges, while the reinforced-concrete slab and 40 harbour pilings provide structural resilience. The main-floor finish is designed to be sacrificial in the event of flooding, reducing the need to protect or replace delicate finishes. Gypsum board is restricted to the upper level to reduce flood damage. These measures can reduce repairs and replacement materials over the building’s lifetime.
