Embodied carbon
The project uses regionally sourced wood as a primary aesthetic material throughout the tasting room, including light- and dark-stained cedar, vertical-grain Douglas fir, and white oak. A redwood hearth bench salvaged from a Northern California trestle bridge and custom millwork from local manufacturers further decreased the carbon footprint of materials.
Operational Emissions / Energy
A ground-mounted 24-kW solar array on the uphill slope helps the project achieve a measured 60% reduction in energy consumption from benchmark and the tasting room is all-electric except for propane used in the fireplace. A wall of windows along the south and west sides of the tasting room brings natural light indoors, reducing the need for artificial lighting throughout the day and deep overhangs protect interiors from glare. Operable windows in all spaces, as well as large sliding doors, encourage regular natural ventilation in both public and private areas of the building.
