Materials, sourcing, and manufacture

  • Our approach was guided less by individual ‘green’ products than by a broader sourcing strategy. Wherever possible, we selected manufacturers from Jihlava and the surrounding region, reducing transport distances while supporting local production and craftsmanship. This included precast concrete elements supplied by PREFA, locally manufactured steel structures, custom seating by Kovostal, and custom-made lighting by BOMMA, based in a nearby glassworks.
  • The rooftop running track uses CONICA’s CONIPUR SW system, whose elastic base layer contains recycled rubber granules and can be installed without solvents.
  • When assessing suppliers, we were also interested in how and where their products were manufactured, including the sources of energy used in production.
  • In essence, this reflects our broader approach: to work with locally available resources and expertise while carefully considering the environmental impact of how materials and products are made.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Operational energy and performance

  • Rather than being driven primarily by a specific environmental certification, the design was shaped by several practical performance targets. The arena’s central location helps minimise car dependency by making it easily accessible on foot, by bicycle, and by public transport.
  • Operational energy demand is reduced by reusing waste heat generated during ice production to heat the building, while passive shading limits solar gains and helps prevent overheating. These measures were integrated into the architectural and building-services design from the outset.
  • The building envelope was designed to provide both acoustic insulation and a high level of thermal comfort. Its secondary facade provides passive shading, reducing solar heat gains and the risk of overheating.
  • We are currently monitoring the building’s heat consumption and cooling demand, but it is too early to provide meaningful figures. (September 2026)
