Embodied carbon

Efficient
  • Embodied carbon reduction is centred on the building’s bio-based construction. Above a low-carbon concrete basement, the superstructure uses a timber frame by Rubner insulated with 37-centimetre-thick straw bales installed on edge. The combination of solid brick cladding with the timber frame required an ATEX technical assessment. The project also carries the Bio-based Building label, reflecting the role of plant-derived materials within the construction.
  • The project team reports an Ic construction value of 860 kg CO2e/m². Under France’s RE2020 methodology, Ic construction assesses the climate impact of construction products, equipment, and their implementation over the building’s reference life cycle, encouraging reductions in material-related emissions and the use of bio-based materials that store biogenic carbon.
  • The solid facade uses Wienerberger’s Terca Basia Rouge espagnol facing brick, which the manufacturer describes as fully recyclable. Internally, Topakustik Micro micro-perforated acoustic panels contribute to sound absorption.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient
  • The project is designed to perform five percent better than the 2025 energy and carbon requirements under France’s RE2020 regulations. It also achieved HQE V3 certification at Excellent level and the Smart Building label.
  • Operational demand is reduced through the building envelope and solar-control measures. The timber frame structure is insulated with 37-centimetre-thick straw bales, while external blinds to the timber windows and doors limit solar gain.
  • Photovoltaic panels are installed on the lightweight roof spanning the interior street and generate part of the electricity consumed directly on site.
