MJMA is a Toronto, Canada-based multidisciplinary team of 60 designers and architects. MJMA has had the privilege of being in the vanguard of the design of hybrid community recreation projects and leading the advancement of a new social and civic architectural typology. The firm has helped to evolve the understanding of what a community building can be and to elevate its position in the fabric of our cities. Until the 1980’s the typical community recreation facility was a utilitarian athletic centre consisting of arenas, single purpose pools, and gymnasiums connected via pragmatic circulation space. Recognizing the civic potential of these forms, we have strived with our clients to evolve these upwards from singular use community offerings to inclusive, town, suburban, and urban centres which merge overlapping requirements and are configured to condense contemporary social activities. This spirit of innovation, cultivated with clients who are enthusiastic about creating meaningful architecture that positively contributes to the build environment, has resulted in more than 75+ national awards, including the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture and the 2016 RAIC Architectural Firm Award.
