a|911 is an independent practice based in Mexico City founded in 2002 by Saidee Springall and Jose Castillo committed to architecture, urban design and planning projects.
Their work includes research, cultural, institutional, housing, mobility projects and mixed-use master plans in various cities in Mexico. Their award-winning projects include the expansion of the Spanish Cultural Center, the Elena Garro Cultural Center, the García Terres Library, the Siqueiros Public Art Gallery and the Ara Iztacalco housing project among many others.
Their urbanism work includes mobility projects such as the Neza-Chimalhuacan bus rapid transit project as well as Maribus+Acabici, a water and shared-bike mobility project in Acapulco. Other projects include Azcania, a 55-hectare master plan for the former railyard warehouses of Pantaco, Mexico City designed with Arup, Parque Xitli a 15-hectare, 750,000 m2 mixed-use development in Mexico City designed with SHoP as well as a number of logistical and industrial parks throughout Mexico.
Amongst their awards and recognitions a|911 has received Mexico’s National Housing Award in 2011, the Bronze Medal of the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction Latin America (2011), Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York (2012), Travel + Leisure Design Award 2014 and the Best of Year 2013 by Interior Design as well as the Project of the Year by ArchDaily and Plataforma Arquitectura, the Audi Urban Future Award (2014). In 2015 a|911 was recognized as the most visionary architectural firm in Mexico by Obras Magazine and recently both Springall and Castillo were selected as recipients of the 2017 Richard Rogers Fellowship, a new residency program at the Wimbledon House in London.
