Calico, the Brooklyn based Wallpaper atelier, is the creative force behind the gilded marbled wallpapers and bespoke wall murals debuted at this year’s Architectural Digest Home Design Show. The work is the brainchild of creative and life partners Rachel Mosler and Nick Cope, who have taken inspiration from ancient techniques to create a look that is both sumptuous and timeless. The finest materials and a buoyant hand create depth and movement, giving the landscapes a hint of alchemy. Calico is wallpaper raised to high art.
Mosler begins by marbleizing paper swatches, which Cope then adapts to fit any wall size. Because the panels are customizable, the murals appear as cohesive compositions, eschewing the repeat patterns found in most marbled paper.
“We wanted paint and light to dance without breaks,” says Mosler. “I’m an artist and Nick is a designer. He loved the work that I was doing, and I loved his idea to apply it to interiors.”
It was the marbleizing arts of Turkey and Italy that first inspired Mosler to develop her own style. When Hurricane Sandy stranded her and Cope in their Brooklyn loft, they began to think of ways to combine their perspectives. When their project outgrew the loft, the couple found Dieu Donné, a non-profit artist workspace dedicated to papermaking as a contemporary art form. They commissioned the organization to create the perfect recipe for handmade cotton paper, which Mosler marbleizes in studio.
“We see Calico as a form of sophisticated design, which is more about skill and time tested methods than exclusivity,” says Cope. “It’s possible to be both accessible and resplendent, however what we enjoy most is creating work that makes people stop and consider the canvas.”
Calico debuted at The Architectural Digest Home Design Show. Prices are available upon request.
