A renewable alternative to Western Red Cedar, Vulcan is New Zealand’s first carbon negative feature timber. The thermal modification process used in its production results in a stable timber with low moisture content - meaning it won’t warp, cup or bleed.

This also makes Vulcan Cladding suitable for coating in dark colours, even in warm climates. Create clean lines using various profiles, including vertical shiplap and bevel back. With a variety of coatings, finishes and profile options, Vulcan is perfect for bespoke architectural aesthetics and applications.

As the thermal modification process is preservative and chemical free, it is also safe and effective for interior applications and joinery. Vulcan is manufactured with a patented process resulting in an engineered vertical grain orientation that reduces cracking and enables stable weathering long term.

Environmental Product Declaration and Declare Red List Free certified, each square meter of 20mm thick Vulcan Cladding stores 9.74 kg of carbon.

Finish + Color

Architects and specifiers can choose from brushed or bandsawn finishes. Nineteen options range from ebony, graphite and walnut to white, patina and straw.

Thermally modified timber

Vulcan timbers are treated with heat and steam rather than chemicals, which means the product is ‘pre-shrunk’ and will be more stable in service.

Grown trees experience resistance (like wind for example) perpendicular to the grain, so it makes sense to produce wood products which are also cut perpendicular to the grain. Abodo Vulcan Cladding is vertical grain, which means weatherboards have greater stability and less surface cracking.

This product is naturally durable, and contains no wood preservatives. Just as nature intended.

Vulcan Cladding details

Vulcan Cladding is covered by a 15 year Built to Last Warranty.

Vulcan Cladding is a tongue and groove cladding system ethically crafted from New Zealand plantation Radiata Pine making it a truly sustainable timber. Abodo uses world class thermal modification technology to convert the pine to a highly durable exterior timber. The thermally modified pine is then engineered with a unique vertical grain orientation to gain outstanding strength and stability.

Unlike typical European softwoods, our pine is free of knots and other visual defects. Our Red List Free termite treatment gives peace of mind and our applied fine sawn finish ensures superior coating performance to reduce maintenance. When compared to knotty appearance timbers and traditional hardwoods, the above combination gives Vulcan Cladding superior stability, no resin leaching and long term durability.

Reference projects

Cascading Volumes

Designed as an extension of the surrounding landscape, the project pairs Vulcan Timber Cladding finished in the natural, silvery tones of Sioo:x Wood Coating with a combination of pale stone and tiling, resulting in a cohesive and calming home by the sea. The home is entirely clad in vertically mounted Vulcan, with the Sioo:x coating chosen as a means of obtaining a natural look, similar to silvered off cedar, but with greater durability due to the thermal modification process undertaken in its manufacturing. This finish also provides a softness to the exterior, which is in keeping with the color palette of the landscape on the Sunshine Coast.

Sanctum House

This Tasmanian family home provides a sense of quiet sanctuary through its refined, minimal palette of robust materials in pared back tones, including Vulcan Nexus Cladding in Protector - Ebony for exterior cladding and and Vulcan Cladding also in Ebony for interior linings. The home uses a mix of esoteric handmade bricks imported from Denmark and richly toned Abodo Vulcan timber cladding in Ebony – the result being a beautifully contrasting series of plains, with the lightweight timber elements resting, and cantilevering in some areas, over the denser bricks.

Food Innovation Precinct

A palette of Vulcan timbers lends a sense of cohesion to this food research and development facility’s three interconnected hubs, which service Commercial Innovation, Research, and Food Production. The collective Food Innovation Precinct’s overall look and feel is designed to reference rural and agricultural structures. To deliver this look while still maintaining the essence of a modern scientific facility, exposed steel framing and bracing is juxtaposed against warm Protector – Straw tones and black stained Vulcan timber cladding, accented with Vulcan Screening in Protector - Manuka.
