Barclays Center Arena

Barclays Center is the home of the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Islanders, and is the site of more than 200 sports and performance events annually. Its design, including close integration with mass-transit and the creation of a popular public square, has helped it to become the most successful new venue in the country. SHoP designed the 18,000-seat bowl, practice courts, entry, food halls, and a number of clubs and lounges as a dramatic yet cohesive environment, breaking with precedent by maintaining visual connections between the arena's interior and neighborhood life on the surrounding streets. This connection is heightened by the decision to open direct views of the main space and its hanging scoreboard to passersby gathering on the public plaza outside the arena.

Material inspiration came from the Brooklyn night, streaky streetlights and wet pavement, and the desire to highlight the borough's industrial past. The exterior is composed of nearly 12,000 uniquely-dimensioned weathered steel panels, a system that was created, managed, produced, and installed by leveraging SHoP's industry-leading direct-to-fabrication capabilities. Barclays' planned green roof will be completed in 2015. With over 135,000 square feet of purpose-grown Connecticut sedum, it is one of the most extensive in the city and largest ever to be installed on an arena.
