COUNTRY HOUSE IN EXTREMADURA

Estate in extremadura

Positioned within the rolling landscape of the caceres province of spain, the 'estate in extremadura' is a single family residence designed by madrid-based firm abaton. Transformed from an abandoned stable, the contemporary intervention is respectful of the environment just the structure was in its original state. The orientation of the building exposes an elongated southern facade to the sloping terrain and valley, introducing daylight throughout the entire day. The solid stone supporting walls have been selectively opened to harness the natural illumination, structurally supplemented with metal pillars while maintaining the rustic exterior. The previous haylofts now contain the bedrooms.

Two streams which naturally pass through the property provide electricity during the winter months with the addition of small turbines. The water is diverted into a fountain within an open-air interior courtyard as well as a larger storage pond. Bordered with stone and glass sliding doors, the courtyard may be opened and merged into the living area, welcoming the murmuring sounds of the water into the interior.
