Kunsthaus Dahlem - Berlin

Albert Speer’s project for Great Berlin foresaw the
construction of State ateliers for several artists who would
contribute to the creation of the Reich’s capital with their
work. One of these was built between 1938 and 1941 for
the sculptor Arno Breker. The rigorously symmetrical layout
of the longitudinal building comprises three buildings; the
simple façades are characterised by brick facing and full height
door-windows, which can be opened completely to allow the
movement of large sculptures. The spacious interiors, on
the other hand, are finished with precious materials – marble
bases for the sculptures, stuccos, oak doors – and large
skylights in the ceiling. The building’s meticulous restoration
and transformation into a modern art museum revives and
enhances these elements; this is particularly true of the
structure of the doors and windows that were rebuilt with
0S2 75 profiles in painted galvanised steel, thus restoring
the façades’ original appearance and meeting the need for
the refined elegance of the interiors.
