The space, with about 6.00m of ceiling height, is integrated in a monotonous complex of shops in the eastern part of the city of Porto. Taking advantage of the available interior volume, the proposal is defined as a light box that rests delicately inside the pre-existing concrete box where soft materials contrast with the existing rough textures, constituting a discreet urban element, but with relevance in the surrounding set.

Inspired by an authentic Japan and without folkloric elements, the proposal addresses fundamental issues of living and working in the city, such as space optimization, sustainability, ergonomics and poetry.

The volume absorbs work, bathroom and reception spaces that take us back to small and cozy Japanese spaces through the use of natural materials and textures, applied in a manual and traditional way.

In a universe of neutral and low saturation colors, the use of blood color with a high-gloss finish, refers to Aka, a color with a dominant presence in traditional Japanese culture.

The delicacy of Japanese architecture is emphasized by the use of shoji throughout the spaces. These panels, structured in solid wood that frame natural linen cloths, allow natural light to enter the interior, but in a diffuse way, creating a soft atmosphere that changes according to the natural light of the day or the artificial lighting of the night.

The central element of the interior of the box is the sculpture staircase. Delicate and ethereal like a carefully unrolled sheet of paper, but at the same time dynamic and unifying.

While city life continues at a fast pace, we encapsulate concepts such as peace, tranquility and design in this urban environment.
