This redevelopment of a city block at the south-western corner of Leicester Square will create a striking new presence within one of the capital's most significant urban spaces while complementing ongoing plans to upgrade and reinvigorate Leicester Square. The proposals accommodate a new two-screen cinema, a hotel, a range of private apartments and a number of restaurants on the Leicester Square frontage, enhancing this key site within the city’s primary entertainment district.
Gently-rounded elevations lead the eye around the facade and emphasise the treatment of the scheme as an entire city block. At the north-eastern corner of the site the structure projects outwards to form a full-height, curved built form clad in dynamic undulating bands of mirror-finish stainless steel, anchoring the south-western corner of Leicester Square and creating a new landmark for the area.
An elliptical void carved out of the main body of the building creates the principal cinema entrance and draws natural light into the heart of the site.Amongst other sustainable design measures, the scheme features a photovoltaic array on the roof and a gas-fired CHP system which will reduce carbon emissions for the building by 16 per cent.
