Haarlemmermeer has a severe housing shortage. The densification vision states that the major housing challenge will be met by densifying the existing core areas, including around Hoofddorp station. The development of Spoorzone Hoofddorp will help to alleviate the housing shortage, and the use of public transport will be stimulated by the arrival of the metro, a greater diversity of living environments and additional jobs.

The development of the Spoorzone also focuses on the extension of the metro to Schiphol and Hoofddorp, the MIRT (Multi-Year Programme for Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Transport) exploration of the Amsterdam-Haarlemmermeer public transport link.

The area will benefit from the arrival of the metro, creating the potential for a mixed, urban and diverse area around the station (the Hoofddorp Multimodal Hub, or MKH). In a framework based on the characteristic Haarlemmermeer polder, a connected network will be created with the existing city. Different quadrants with their own individual characteristics can develop into a vibrant whole.
