Station Bergweg Rotterdam

The art of removing

This transformation from the former 'Rotterdam Bergweg station' now houses pizzarestaurant Happy Italy with ease. A sparkling new hotspot in Rotterdam Noord, and this time not only for the happy few. Beyond gentrification: everyone from the neighborhood and beyond is eating out here!

The station building was designed in the late 1950s by architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, one of his last station designs. After the station fell into disuse in June 2006, the building rapidly deteriorated. An equally shabby Eudokiaplein at the time created a not-too-beautiful ensemble.

The origins of the plans lie in 2009, when JagerJanssen decided on its own initiative to make a plan for the redevelopment of the station in order to protect it from further deterioration. We discovered that the 7 arches of the viaduct - the actual monument - run continuously through the station building. The station is, as it were, draped around the viaduct.

That brought us to a simple spatial idea: we are going to make the structure transparent by making the fronts transparent towards Eudokia Square. By restoring the entrance to the Bergweg in honor and removing a number of non-load-bearing inner walls, a covered through route is created along the court arches, which leads through Bergweg Station.
The tallest building in Rotterdam is thus experienced and strolling court archers at the site of the former station will automatically become part of a possible catering facility.
