EGP/UPBS building proposal is a capable, responsible, rigorous system, which promotes the processes of learning and transition of knowledge.
University, in its essential concept, is a space that represents a noble character, translated into a non intimidating respect. It shall seduce, arouse and appeal for interest and curiosity, as an invitation to knowledge – not only academic, but also the knowledge of the building itself.
The building is understood as a big diamond, with the unpolished, textured and rough outer texture, and with polished and bright interior. The architectural object is a symbol of value and knowledge itself.
This is a place of two moments: one rough - exterior textured character –and one interior moment in contrast - with shinning, bright and elegant sliced look. The metaphor has similarities with the process of cutting gems stones, lapidating the learning and crystallizing knowledge.
The functional organization is based in a clear and direct approach, in order to join collaboratively all the uses, ensuring a proper internal management, which is maximized functionally by repetition of elements. The modular orthogonal grid was therefore the ideal approach to solve the program, using repetition to create valid and intense exceptions in space.
The use of a regular grid allows the modularization of the areas and their elements, allowing a secure possibility for expansion and growth. The program develops and organizes itself around inner courtyards. These have, in essence, an obvious functional intent: provide light in the interstitial spaces and allow physical access to a controlled, relaxed and privatized area.
Despite its monolithic appearance, the "morphological" skin creates, by subtracting negative mass, a solid object at the same time it conveys rhythms to the facade, multiplying the diversity of perspectives, creating a richer and more dynamic architectural experience.
