Saxion Enschede

Located on the city campus of Saxion University in Enschede, Epy Drost is an extension to the former textile school as well as an independent building. Completed in 2009 by IAA Architects, it is part of the first ‘City Campus’ in Holland, housing numerous restaurants, sporting facilities, a job agency, shops and a theatre. As a City Campus, Saxion Enschede does not look like a traditional campus. It naturally follows that Epy Drost does not look like a traditional faculty school. It is designed as a clear, simple volume with a screen printed glass facade construction that embraces the old building like a second skin. Further to this, the building has a narrow and broad side with an asymmetrically positioned building core. This makes it possible to create both simple large and small modern spaces, while construction free floor spans allow for an open and flexible use of space. A roof terrace around on the 9th floor offers students and teachers a beautiful view over the city of Enschede.

Echoing the non-traditional spirit of the design, materials used within the school’s modern spaces include custom designed Kho Liang Ie Mosa wall tiles in a youthful and vibrant yellow colour, while tiles from the Terra Maestricht Collection (216 and 206) offer a high-traffic flooring solution throughout the flowing, open floor plan.
