Maud Caubet Architectes gives new life to a Brutalist tower in Paris

Pricegore revitalizes a 1960s brutalist terrace in London’s Chelsea district

Detail: A retro-futuristic duplex renovation in iconic Torres Blancas

Brutalist office building in Greece radically transformed by Georges Batzios Architects

Constructed in 1972 in the northern part of Athens, this historic office building was originally designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis and stands as one of the best examples of the brutalist movement in Greece. For many years it served as the home of reinforced concrete company Aget Irkalis before being bought out by the largest concrete company in the world (Larfarge Holcim). The building was vacated in 2010 and was to be demolished in 2017 until a private company, following a closed competition, slated it for a radical reinvention to be undertaken by Georges Batzios Architects.  Giorgos Sfakianakis The architects began the process of reinvention with a deep cleaning of all the building’s surfaces and an analysis... In Brno, Czech Republic, Chybik + Kristof Architects have completed the redesign of Zvonarka Central Bus Terminal. The project saw the architects actively engage in preserving the existing Brutalist structure – a steel supporting frame and concrete roof – and its original identity, preserving and reflecting an important part of the city’s architectural identity. Alex Shoots Buildings Stressing the station’s central role in the city and the region’s sociocultural fabric, the project is further a rethink of a decaying transportation hub and public space, adapting and responding to current social needs. Torto House

Torto House is a contemporary project, whose work is prefabricated and sustainable. We wanted to show a brutalist architecture, with natural and apparent materials, without giving up sophistication and comfort.Basically we have the materials: steel, glass, wood, concrete on the floor, exposed ecological brick, drywall and joinery. A clean work in terms of work and materials, without the use of superfluous coverings or props.   The client's desire was for a house built in a steel structure with the use of prefabricated elements, in order to obtain a quick work without wasting materials and with integrated spaces. The site with an area of 360 square meters and a slope of more than 5 meters high guided the development of the project on tw... United Places Botanic Gardens

United Places boutique hotel demonstrates an architectural response of intense refinement and precision having created 3 levels of hotel accommodation and two floors of restaurant working to a set of rigorous site constraints.   The tracery of the Botanic Gardens plane trees, and the desire to primarily focus the occupants’ connection to view from within, led to an architectural outcome echoing and enhancing the compelling play of shadow and light across the finely articulated façade.   The references to brutalist architecture are deliberate, reflecting an intent to create a building of obvious permanence juxtaposed with a jewel like quality of refinement in its fine bronze detailing.   Designed as an elega... Preston Hollow Residence

The Preston Hollow House blurs the lines between indoors and out. A floating pavilion roof hovers over the interior and exterior spaces while sliding glass panels and corrugated concrete walls define its courtyards. The house is open and light-filled yet provides seclusion from the street.   “It’s right in the middle of the city, yet you really can’t perceive any other houses.”– Scott Specht, principal architect Water helps link the exterior and interior spaces. A narrow channel, punctuated by cascading terraces and a gentle waterfall near the main entry, flows through the house and into the swimming pool. At night, lighting within the stream casts changing patterns on the textured walls. The concrete... Meer

Casa Juárez

The house in its current state was a sample of brutalist architecture. A clear example of this is its facade that presents the walls with its brick apparent, which was a great architectural value and why it was important to try to respect it as much as possible.   The great defect that the house presented was its internal distribution, since it was a mixture of spaces that are visually divided by architectural elements giving a feeling of small areas difficult to take advantage of for an ideal setting, also we had a series of narrow corridors they cared little of the crossing of circulations and that made difficult a good zoning of public and private spaces inside the house.   The design intention was to reuse the beauty of th... Library renovation, Erasmus University Rotterdam

The library building at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, built in 1968, is an example of brutalist architecture and is a municipal monument. It has been undergoing a sweeping renovation of its architecture and engineering installations. Having reached the end of its life-span, the building also needed upgrading to meet current and future ways of working. As more and more books are becoming digitalized, printed books are disappearing into the background. The renovated building will contain about 900 study spaces, 50 office spaces for staff, and the collections of the University Library and Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet.   In the simplicity and clearness of the original design we found a clear line for the transformation: to bring back the... Playground Restaurant

Location: Chandigarh, India Architects: Loop Design Studio Lead Architects: Suvrita Bhardwaj, Nikhil Pratap Singh Area: 370 sq. metres Year of construction: 2018 Photography: Purnesh Dev Nikhanj (https://www.purneshdev.com/) Client: Ayush Singla/ WOW Hospitality   The intent behind creating Playground was to break the conventionality of brutalist architecture of Chandigarh. The inside/outside concept was quashed and the restaurant has been treated as a single envelope that flows from one end to another. The expansive single surface has been broken into multiple levels and sections with their own vibe and spatial characteristics. This helps realize the client's vision of 'restaurants within a restaurant' where each section would... Meer
