Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center takes a world-class visitor experience to new altitudes
Het Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center van GWWO Architects, een finalist voor de Archello Awards 2023, reageert op de adembenemende omgeving door uitzichten te behouden, het land licht te betreden en de nadruk te leggen op milieubescherming. Het is gelegen in de grote bergen van Colorado op een hoogte van 4314 meter (14,155 feet), is het hoogste bezoekerscentrum ter wereld en vereiste als zodanig een zorgvuldige, nauwgezette ontwerpplanning en -uitvoering.

Als je het huis nadert, blijft het laag opvallen - een idee dat mogelijk werd gemaakt door de twee vleugels gedeeltelijk in de topografie te begraven. Trappen geflankeerd door kleurrijke inheemse bloemperken leiden naar een uitnodigende binnenplaats, waar ramen een glimp opvangen van de kunstcollectie van de eigenaar. Aan de buitenkant van het huis is op verschillende manieren verweerd staal gebruikt als gevelbekleding, leuningen, schoorstenen, steunmuren en spuigaten, aangevuld met behandeld essenhout.
