Sustainability Report
Embodied carbon
SuperHub Meerstad is designed to be flexible and reusable. Its structure primarily consists of cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements and trusses. The FSC-certified larch wood is from European forests, supplied by Ede-based timber merchant Heko Spanten. All wood elements have a width and depth of 200 x 600 mm; lengths vary but do not exceed 15 meters, ensuring ease of transportation and assembly.
SuperHub Meerstad’s structure consists of a diagonal grid of cross-shaped curved supports. The supports transition from a column to a curved beam. The building is transparent on all sides, supported by a sustainable wooden frame. The large span, nine-metre ceiling height creates an exceptionally bright and flexible space. The wooden roof has an overhang of 5.4 meters. This substantial canopy shields the building from solar radiation and embraces the surrounding environment.
Product specifications
- 1,150 square meters of CLT elements and beams/trusses.
- 300 cubic meters of European larch and spruce wood.
- RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond is used on the roof. This fully self-adhesive and root-resistant EPDM waterproofing membrane is hot air welded. RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond is FLL-certified (indicating that the product meets specific standards for sustainability and environmental performance). It is ideally suited to green roof applications.
- The Forster Thermfix Vario insulated curtain wall system is used. The 60 x 250 x 5 mm format spans approximately 8.8 meters and incorporates heat-insulating triple glazing.
- The Forster Unico system is used for the building’s double doors. Forster Unico offers a long service life, high thermal insulation values, and contactless operation.
- Vandaglas solar heat-resistant TriplePerform XTR70/33 triple glazing is used for straight facade sections; curved solar heat-resistant IsoPerform XTR70/33 double glazing is used for curved facade elements.
Operational Emissions / Energy
- SuperHub’s roof is reserved for solar panels and plants that support biodiversity, attracting bees and insects.
- Integrated building technologies include an air treatment system and an underground thermal energy storage system that guarantee an optimal and energy-efficient indoor climate.
- The building’s grid structure incorporates multiple roof windows, allowing natural daylight to penetrate deeply into the its core.
Afterlife
The precise geometry of SuperHub Meerstad ensures a stable structure that doesn’t require additional diagonals or braces. This increases the building’s multifunctional nature and sustainable quality. The building currently houses a supermarket, but its function can be modified by removing all structural elements.
