Embodied carbon

Efficient

The kindergarten is certified in accordance with the Swiss Minergie standard for comfort, efficiency, and climate protection.

  • The building has an AE (Actual Energy) of 1,341 square metres and an Ath/AE form ratio of 1.76. (Ath is the Total Heated Area.)
  • The calculated Minergie Index is 32.3 kWh/m2 compared to a limit of 44.8 kWh/m2.

The kindergarten’s energy consumption is below the acceptable limit, indicating it is energy efficient.

Building shell

  • The kindergarten is constructed with an exposed concrete structure.
  • To minimise energy losses, thermal bridges were addressed; more specifically, thermal breaks were installed for the roof slab and floors facing outwards.
  • To regulate solar energy intake, external shading devices from Griesser and Mermet, with a transmission coefficient of 17 percent, have been installed. These devices are automatically adjusted based on the solar radiation levels measured for each orientation.
  • To ensure optimal thermal performance of the envelope, appropriate sealing has been provided between the windows and doors, walls and ceilings.

Heating and cooling

The building’s heating is provided by a reversible air-water heat pump with heat recovery. It has a high CLA efficiency of 4.67. Heating is emitted via underfloor coils.

Cooling is produced by the reversible air-water heat pump. Cooling coils are also provided on ventilation monoblocks.

Ventilation

Air exchange of the heated spaces is carried out by mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. This has an efficiency of over 70 percent. CO2 probes connect to the dampers on various parts of the ventilation system, ensuring clean air is directed to the rooms used by children.

Photovoltaic system

The kindergarten is equipped with a photovoltaic system from Knubix that can produce up to 29.7 kilowatts of power at peak sunlight. Each kilowatt peak of the system is expected to generate around 1,100 kWh of electricity annually, with a total annual production of approximately 33,000 kWh/y. It is expected that over 60 percent of the electricity produced will be consumed on-site, reducing electricity costs and increasing energy independence.

Building management system

A building automation system integrates the functions of room thermostats with the control of external lights and sun blinds.
