Embodied carbon

Low Carbon

Minergie is a Swiss construction standard for comfort, efficiency, and climate protection. The sports hall’s design and build fulfil the Minergie-P-ECO standard. This pertains to: interior climate, sound insulation and acoustics, daylight and activation of users, climate protection and resources, building concept and circular economy, biodiversity and water cycle, climate resilience, and innovation.

The project’s use of sustainable wood elements makes a significant contribution to the sports hall’s low embodied carbon and ensures the building acts as a carbon store. These elements include the building’s untreated larch facade, beech veneer timber beams, spruce and fir glulam columns, OSB, and HDF.

Commercially available prefabricated facade elements were used in order to avoid waste and make the best use of transportation, thereby reducing the project’s carbon impact.

Operational Emissions / Energy

  • Glazing is integrated into the facade pattern and shade is provided by external fixed vertical slat “curtains” with a customised depth.
  • The sports hall’s few south-facing windows are fitted with an additional sun protection foil.
  • A moderate reduction of window apertures works to counteract overheating, without impacting adequate natural illumination of the building.
  • The building utilises 100 percent district heating.
  • Any wear and tear is easily repaired or renewed.

Afterlife

The sports hall is designed for complete disassembly and reuse.
