Embodied carbon
Earthboat utilises CLT for its structure and insulation, eliminating synthetic materials and reducing its embodied carbon footprint.
- The CLT used in Earthboat is certified under FSC and SGEC (Sustainable Green Ecosystem Council) standards.
- The CLT panels also meet JAS F☆☆☆☆ certification for low formaldehyde emissions.
- The Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) is an important quality mark in Japan for building materials such as wood and CLT.
- The F (Formaldehyde )☆☆☆☆ certification is the highest rating. It signifies the lowest emissions.
Operational Emissions / Energy
All panels are prefabricated with high efficiency, having a 90%+ yield. Offcuts are reused for small furniture pieces and biomass energy.
The cabin saunas often use on-site firewood from local forest maintenance, integrating small-scale renewable energy practices.
The cabins are designed to function off-grid or with very modest energy input.
The Earthboat exterior is treated with Livos oil. This plant-based, biodegradable finish penetrates the cedar’s grain while allowing it to breathe, age, and gently decompose over time.
Afterlife
Earthboat is an entirely foundation-free structure, allowing for relocation and reuse without demolition.
The entire structure is made of CLT panels, which can be reused once disassembled or left to biodegrade naturally.
