Mobile CLT cabin rethinks eco-conscious tourism

Earthboat, a mobile cabin built entirely from Japanese cedar cross-laminated timber (CLT), presents a new blueprint for eco-conscious tourism. Designed by PAN-PROJECTS, a London-based architectural design studio led by Japanese architects Yuriko Yagi and Kazumasa Takada, Earthboat is a self-contained nature retreat with no solid foundations: the cabins can be relocated as needed.

Sustainable cabins revitalising Japan’s rural landscapes

Earthboat is not confined to a single location. The cabins are dispersed across rural areas of northern-central Japan, primarily located in Nagano Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture. The foundation-free, almost floating design of the cabins minimises their environmental impact. There is no need for extensive groundwork, ensuring both preservation of the natural terrain and ease of relocation.

Earthboat’s client was born in Nagano Prefecture and grew up in a mountainous region, surrounded by ski resorts. “The client witnessed the gradual decline of these once vibrant resorts,” says PAN-PROJECTS. “Many of the facilities were built during Japan’s late 20th-century economic boom and now remain inactive elements of the landscape.”

The project’s aim was to respond to this shift from the outset, by reinhabiting places with minimal land impact, reconnecting people with nature, and supporting renewed activity. The Earthboat cabin, with its compact architectural design, was conceived as a way to achieve this goal without the need for an invasive or permanent structure. An example of regenerative architecture, the cabin’s design seeks to actively restore and revitalise ecosystems, communities, and materials.

A functional, replicable CLT cabin

In summary, “the brief was to design a small, adaptable accommodation model that integrates quietly into its surroundings, encourages new use, and avoids becoming a burden,” says PAN-PROJECTS. “The design needed to be mobile and scalable, allowing for the revitalisation of sites nationwide while remaining open to future change.”

The studio focused on refining a single unit into a functional, replicable structure. Each 20.5-square-metre cabin is built from Japanese cedar CLT. The CLT is prefabricated near Tokyo and then transported for on-site installation. The prefabricated system, developed in close collaboration between the architects, manufacturers, and contractors, enables single-day assembly and reduces material waste. The cabin is assembled without the use of adhesives or insulation. While CLT is commonly used in large public buildings in Japan, Earthboat adapts it to a compact format, making it suitable for rural areas with similar conditions.

Understated elegance

The cabin design is an expression of understated elegance. The simple and familiar exterior form integrates into the landscape. The exterior is clad in Japanese cedar, finished with a natural, plant-based oil. This treatment allows the wood to weather gracefully over time, embracing the natural processes of ageing.

Inside the cabin, a large window frames the landscape, anchoring the spatial experience. The exposed timber contributes to the warm and quiet atmosphere. Each unit includes a living-bedroom area, a small kitchen, and bathroom. A compact sauna supports year-round use and activates the timber’s thermal mass during colder seasons. Comfort is achieved solely by means of the solid timber’s thermal performance.

Earthboat’s mobility allows it to be relocated as needed, connecting urban dwellers to nature and providing an alternative to more conventional forms of hospitality design. The cabin’s design could serve as a model for future adaptive reuse initiatives, particularly those associated with the climate emergency.
