Embodied carbon

Low Carbon

The primary strategy for reducing embodied carbon focused on material substitution, particularly in the use of concrete.

  • GGBS in Concrete: The project incorporated Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) into its concrete mixes. This industrial byproduct replaced a significant portion of traditional Portland cement, which is highly carbon-intensive. This resulted in substantial embodied carbon savings, specifically compared to the traditional concrete mix.

  • Material Efficiency: The focus on replacing high-carbon materials suggests an overall commitment to minimizing the embodied impact of the infrastructure.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Paris Proof

The fully electric system drastically reduces emissions in line with strategic, long-term carbon reduction goals, supporting Luton's 2040 carbon neutral vision and resulting in less than one-third of the emissions of the system it replaced. Operational sustainability was the core driver of the Luton DART project, as the system itself is a critical step in decarbonizing airport transit.

  • Electrification of Transit: The DART is a fully electric, cable-drawn transit system. This directly replaces a polluting diesel shuttle bus service, resulting in a projected reduction of less than one-third of the carbon emissions associated with the previous bus service over the period of 2023–2050.

  • Passive Station Design: The stations were designed to be naturally ventilated, completely removing the need for energy-intensive air conditioning and cooling systems.

  • Optimized Lighting: Real-time sensor-based lighting systems were installed to optimize energy consumption by ensuring lights are only operating at the required level when passengers are present.

  • Congestion and Air Quality: The DART is designed to increase the number of people traveling to the airport by sustainable modes (rail/DART) by 45%, further reducing congestion and improving air quality in the surrounding areas.
