The Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) Gateway Bridge serves as a distinctive gateway within London Luton Airport’s new rapid transit system. It carries passengers directly from the mainline Luton Airport Parkway station to the terminal, dramatically improving access by public transport.
The bridge acts as a bold threshold to London Luton Airport, its sweeping structure creating a striking marker on the skyline. As part of the airport’s automated transit system, it carries passengers from Luton Airport Parkway station to the terminal in under four minutes. This reimagined arrival sequence transforms the former bus transfer into a seamless continuation of the rail journey, making Luton one of the quickest airports to reach from central London—with travel times from St Pancras now just 32 minutes.
Sustainable transit infrastructure
The fully electric, cable-drawn DART replaces the former diesel bus link, reducing journey times, congestion, and emissions. Over the next two decades, it is projected to save more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon and over one million kilowatt-hours of energy each year.

Designing for people and planet
The station architecture emphasizes openness, lightness, and passive design. Natural ventilation replaces air conditioning, with parasol roofs casting shade and opening concourses to light and air. Supported by slender central columns, the parasol roofs cantilever nearly 20 meters, creating weather-protected spaces that remain naturally ventilated.
This design removes the need for air conditioning or extensive artificial lighting. Solar film on glazing helps regulate indoor temperatures. Exposed blockwork and concrete finishes express a raw aesthetic while reducing material use.
Low-carbon materials and circular design
Embodied carbon was reduced through the use of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) concrete, which cuts up to 510 kilograms of carbon per metric ton compared to conventional cement mixes. Sustainable materials, including GGBS concrete, recycled aluminum, glass, and plasterboard, were carefully selected.
Minimal finishes and exposed structures create durable, easily maintained spaces, while inclusive design ensures full accessibility. Beneath the guideway, native grasslands and more than 1,500 new plantings contribute to biodiversity net gain, embedding environmental resilience into the new transit corridor.
Recycled content was prioritized across plasterboard, aluminum, glass, and steel reinforcement, with suppliers chosen for their Environmental Product Declarations and sustainability credentials. More than 150,000 cubic meters of excavated material were retained and reused on site, creating resources for future airport projects and minimizing waste.
Transforming airport access through infrastructure
An airport marks the midpoint of a journey—both departure and arrival. This idea inspired an asymmetric structure that draws the eye upward, anticipating the path ahead. The 72-meter truss spanning Airport Way is primarily viewed from below against the sky. Its parabolic top chord rises from deck level, tapering to a slender profile that appears to fade into the distance.
Combined with the bridge’s curved plan, the design forms a dynamic, elegant arc suited to the shifting perspectives of both road and DART users. The Direct Air-Rail Transit offers more than convenience—it marks a fundamental shift in airport access. Replacing diesel shuttle buses, the fully electric, cable-drawn system emits less than one-third of the carbon of the service it replaces.
At night, the top chord glows with a downward-facing LED system. Unlike conventional uplighting, this system is integrated directly into the structure, ensuring safety within the airport environment without affecting functional lighting.
Together, these strategies advance Luton’s 2040 vision of carbon neutrality and signal a broader shift toward low-carbon public transport. The project maintained a strong commitment to biodiversity net gain throughout its delivery. Since opening, the DART has already removed more than 21 metric tons of local pollutants, improving air quality across Luton.
