Embodied carbon

Efficient

The pavilion is made from FSC-certified Glulam Siberian Larch, which stores carbon within the timber. The biologically active floor and green roof support vegetation, contributing to the building’s sustainability.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Energy Neutral

The pavilion achieves carbon-neutral operational emissions through its passive and energy-efficient design, which is ehated by a thermal energy system that will soon extend to all of ARTIS. This thermal energy storage system heats the zoo with water from the surrounding canals. The temperature of this water is about 18 degrees during summer. The warm water is stored underground and in the winter is pumped up again and further heated with heat pumps. Ecologists believe this will also have a positive effect on aquatic life in the canals, since the water will cool by a few degrees in the summer.

Service and maintenance emissions

Efficient

Afterlife

The modular structure and repositionable internal elements allow the building to be adapted to different needs.

Timber columns and other components can be disassembled, making them suitable for reuse or recycling.
