Afterlife
The project utilises a timber-frame construction with a double-height playroom featuring an exposed structure. This approach minimises internal load-bearing partitions, which, combined with a compact and efficient floor plan, allows for easier internal reconfiguration. Such structural openness enables the building to transition into other community-oriented programs or small-scale office spaces in the future without requiring demolition of the primary volume.
The selection of a primary timber envelope and the integration of a secondary timber trellis structure suggest a construction methodology that favours mechanical fixings over chemical adhesives. These timber components, alongside the flat red clay roof tiles, are traditional building elements that can be dismantled relatively easily. By avoiding complex composite materials and mineral-intensive finishes in the interior, the project ensures that a high percentage of the building's mass—specifically the bio-based and clay elements—can be recovered, reused, or recycled at the end of its service life, thus reducing the total embodied carbon over the building's full lifecycle.
