Located in the Alvim district of Sarpsborg, Norway, this project addresses a specific need for expanded childcare capacity within a residential context characterised by a high proportion of low-income households. The development consists of a two-storey extension and the renovation of an existing 1970s structure. The project reached completion within a twelve-month timeframe from site acquisition to the start of the academic term.
Architectural volume and site integration
The new extension is positioned with a deliberate offset from the original single-storey building to maintain a clear distinction between the two construction periods. While the neighbourhood is primarily defined by white timber residential housing, this addition introduces a vertical timber cladding finished in a traditional red earth pigment. This material choice references Norwegian rural vernacular while identifying the building's function as a public utility. The primary structure utilises a timber frame, which contributes to a reduction in the initial carbon footprint of the building assembly compared to mineral-based alternatives.
Materiality and envelope
The roof is clad in flat red clay tiles, a selection that aligns with local planning mandates while providing a durable, low-maintenance weathered surface. On the gable end, a secondary timber trellis structure has been integrated to support climbing vegetation, intended to provide natural shading and improve the local microclimate over time. The focus on bio-based materials for the primary envelope minimizes the embodied carbon of the new volume, ensuring that the physical expansion remains sensitive to the lifecycle emissions associated with material extraction and processing.
Interior configuration and spatial efficiency
The interior layout prioritises functional play areas through a compact floor plan. Large window openings with low sills are utilised to provide natural illumination and a direct visual link to the exterior environment. The walls are finished in neutral colours, providing a subdued backdrop for daily activities. A double-height playroom serves as the central spatial element, featuring an exposed timber structure that reduces the need for additional finishing materials, thereby lowering the interior fit-out's cumulative carbon intensity. Acoustic management is handled through integrated ceiling systems, while the upper floor is dedicated to staff facilities and meeting rooms accessible via a lift platform.
The Alvim Kindergarten demonstrates a strategic approach to densification and the reuse of existing building stock. By opting for a timber-heavy material palette and maximising the utility of the 1970s foundation, the project limits the emissions related to new material production. The result is a robust infrastructure that provides social value to the district while adhering to the technical requirements of low-carbon material selection.
