Embodied carbon
Operational Emissions / Energy
The building is energy-neutral: its annual energy demand is balanced by renewable energy generation. The operational-energy strategy uses heat pumps for heating, underfloor heating and cooling, CO₂-controlled ventilation and PV panels to reduce energy consumption and associated operational emissions. The building also has a high-performance envelope and was upgraded to temperature class B to improve indoor-climate performance. These measures collectively reduce operational energy demand and allow the building to achieve an energy-neutral balance.
Service and maintenance emissions
The building is designed to be demountable, individual building elements can be accessed, serviced, repaired or replaced without requiring the entire building to be taken apart. This reduces the material intervention required for maintenance and allows components to remain in use for longer, reducing maintenance and replacement impact.
Afterlife
The building was designed for future adaptability. It has no load-bearing internal walls, allowing the floorplan to adapt as needs change. The structural system is fully demountable, meaning the building can be adapted for different uses without requiring major structural demolition.
The construction uses bolted, demountable connections rather than cast-in-place structural elements, allowing components to be dismantled and reused. The hollow-core floor slabs are specifically designed to be reusable, while the HSB timber-frame façade elements can also be reused. The project's 55% Building Circularity Index reflects the future reuse potential of its materials and components.
