Embodied carbon

Efficient

Embodied carbon was addressed through material efficiency, selective substitution, and long-term durability. Timber framing was used in place of steel where structurally feasible, while the building was fitted closely to the existing topography to limit grading, excavation, and associated site work. Durable exterior materials were selected to extend service life and reduce replacement cycles, and 99% of the site’s existing forested area was preserved, minimizing landscape disturbance and retaining established vegetation.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

Passive design reduces operational demand through deep overhangs that block summer sun while admitting winter solar gain, a highly insulated north envelope with limited openings, high-performance thermally broken glazing, cross-ventilation, and stack ventilation through an operable skylight. Efficient hydronic radiant heating and electric heat pumps provide conditioning when passive strategies are insufficient, while rooftop photovoltaic arrays offset electricity used by the house and electric vehicles.
