Located in Emigration Canyon near the historic California Trail, Emigration House occupies one of the remaining undeveloped parcels within a residential subdivision developed in the 1990s and largely built out soon afterward. Although surrounded on all sides by existing homes, the site rises to a small knoll with expansive mountain views. Setbacks, easements, slope restrictions, and a voluntarily observed ridgeline protection zone compress the buildable area into a crescent-shaped zone comprising less than 9% of the property.

To preserve the mountain silhouettes, the house is set behind the knoll’s peak, positioned quietly away from the street and crouched tightly against the existing topography. Rather than cascading down the primary slope toward neighboring homes, it reaches uphill toward the one part of the site from which the city lights become visible below. This sectional fold is paired with another in plan, turning the entry sequence toward protected views of Dale Benchmark and Perkins Peak. The resulting geometry concentrates the project’s most intricate conditions at a central hinge, where shifting proportions create forced perspectives and a stair passes through a full-height glass wall between interior and exterior.

The envelope reinforces this selective relationship to its surroundings. Flat-lock metal cladding wraps from the sloped roof down the largely closed north elevation, shielding the house from winter exposure and neighboring homes, while a clerestory isolates a narrow view of the opposing ridgeline.

To the south and west, deep cantilevers shade a 60-foot multi-slide opening while admitting lower winter sun and expansive mountain views. Throughout the house, existing topography, limited openings, and architectural surfaces selectively frame distant landscapes while screening adjacent development.

From its comparatively closed public face, the house becomes progressively more open as it turns toward private outdoor spaces and distant views, unfolding from a prismatic solid into an architecture of detached planes.
