Clients asked us to make a central island unit in their kitchen. Although the space is narrow and long, they wanted this way of cooking.

We took this constraint of the narrowness and pushed it to its limit. The result is a very long black rectangle of 3.60m long made of granite. There is just enough space on both sides to cook and walk.

On one hand a wooden storage separates the house’s secondary entrance from the kitchen. Light and view on the vegetation come from above this cupboard. Beaumarchais
SituationProject Beaumarchais takes place in a little alley, calm and vegetal, sheltered from the noisy neighborhood.
The former commercial unit has to be transformed into a loft. The existing space is defined by its structure, metallic ceiling and beams, cinder blocks on the walls, by its 3.85m under the ceiling and by its depth, with only one facade towards the exterior to bring light in.

Act without alteringExisting materials are left «as found», just painted in white. The partition of the space is organized in layers from the most private functions in the back to the public ones close to the facade. The real estate market in big cities like Paris is more and more tense. Rents shoot up whereas surface areas decrease. In this context, people are more and more obliged to live in small spaces. Especially for students or low incomes, studios from 10 to 15m² are becoming the norm. For architects, this new Type of living is challenging because it forces us to maximize the feeling of space and the quality of living.

After refurbishing a first studio in Paris 20e, our office miogui was asked for a second one in the same building. It’s almost the same space, with some little differences, that create a different plan, with the same concept. The existing situation is banal, a bathroom too big for the space, one window in the bathroom, one other in the main space, a little kitchen, a big wardrobe, a bed. The main question we want to answer is: How can the space look bigger ?
